Closed-Coupled Magnetic Drive Pump

The Closed-Coupled Magnetic Drive Pump is designed for industrial processes where dependable fluid transfer, compact installation, and leak-free operation are important. By combining the pump and motor in a closed-coupled arrangement, the overall unit requires less installation space while maintaining a direct and stable connection between the drive system and pump.

Instead of using a conventional mechanical shaft seal, the pump transfers torque through a magnetic coupling. The absence of a rotating shaft passing through the containment shell helps prevent the pumped fluid from escaping to the outside, making this design particularly useful when handling corrosive, hazardous, or valuable process fluids.

Design and Construction

The pump is available with corrosion-resistant materials such as SUS316 and SUS316L, depending on the application and selected configuration. These materials provide good resistance to many aggressive process fluids and make the pump suitable for demanding industrial environments.

The closed-coupled arrangement connects the motor and pump directly through a dedicated coupling adapter. This eliminates the need for a separate bearing frame and helps create a more compact pumping unit. It can also simplify installation where available space is limited.

Inside the pump, the impeller is responsible for generating the required flow and pressure, while the support bushings provide stable support for the rotating assembly. Self-lubricating materials can be used for the support components, reducing the need for external lubrication during normal operation.

Magnetic Drive Operation

The magnetic drive system uses inner and outer magnet assemblies to transfer rotational force from the motor to the impeller. A containment shell separates the two assemblies while allowing the magnetic field to transmit torque.

This arrangement removes one of the common leakage points found in conventional pumps: the mechanical shaft seal. As a result, the pump can be a practical choice for processes where preventing contact between the pumped fluid and the surrounding environment is important.

The internal circulation of the pumped fluid also helps cool and lubricate the internal bearing components during operation.

Performance and Operating Range

Depending on the selected model, the pump can deliver a maximum head of up to 150 m and a maximum flow rate of approximately 60 m³/h.

The operating temperature range is approximately -40°C to +250°C, while the pump can handle fluids with viscosities from around 0.5 to 180 cP. The design can also accommodate small solid particles up to approximately 0.3 mm, with a maximum concentration of about 2% by weight. Actual performance depends on the selected model and process conditions.

The relatively low NPSHR of the pump also helps provide better operating conditions at the suction side and can reduce the likelihood of cavitation when the system is correctly designed.

Applications

The closed-coupled magnetic drive configuration can be used across a range of industrial processes, particularly where leakage control and chemical resistance are important.

Typical applications include:

  • Chemical processing
  • Oil and gas facilities
  • Petrochemical plants
  • Pharmaceutical production
  • Process fluid circulation
  • Corrosive chemical transfer
  • High-temperature industrial services

For chemical applications, the sealless design can be especially useful when handling aggressive or hazardous fluids. In oil and gas and petrochemical systems, the combination of compact construction, temperature capability, and magnetic drive technology provides flexibility for a variety of process duties.

Selecting the Right Pump

Choosing the correct model requires more than simply matching the required flow rate. Flow, head, fluid temperature, viscosity, specific gravity, vapor pressure, solids content, and suction conditions should all be considered during pump selection.

The closed-coupled design is particularly suitable where installation space is limited and a compact pump-and-motor assembly is preferred. For demanding applications, the wetted materials and magnetic drive configuration should also be selected according to the properties of the pumped fluid and the required operating temperature.
